Skittles: an iMac Beowulf cluster running Yellow Dog Linux

This is cool if you have a bunch of old fruit-colored iMacs sitting around and you want to build a cluster. They call it Skittles. Cute, and very geeky.

Walmart in Korea

There's a Walmart Supercenter in Korea which has four floors, so to get your shopping cart from floor to floor, they have an interesting kind of escalator without steps, like a raised moving sidewalk. The carts have four wheels that swivel, and they are outfitted with some sort of magnetic braking system. The second your shopping cart is on the conveyor ramp, the wheels lock up.

Thanks to Always Low Prices blog, my favorite source of Walmart gossip.

Atlantic Beach, NC

I went directly from Full Frame to Atlantic Beach, NC for a week of fun in the wind and rain. I was cut off from cyberspace and fully immersed in Real Life. In true female fashion, I spent the week shopping, shelling on the beach, eating out, soaking in the jacuzzi, and visiting museums. I visited Fort Macon and Cape Lookout, where I saw a dolphin jump out of the ocean in front of me :).

The great thing about Netflix is that I didn't have to worry about due dates, so I brought along a DVD player, and all my Netflix discs, for those chilly nights. I managed to squeeze in a few films.

Carolina Theatre in Greensboro: Movies

The Carolina Theatre in Greensboro, NC has two film series that I enjoy:

The Carolina Classics series presents
The Grapes of Wrath (1940)
Tuesday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m.
Grapes of Wrath follows the Joad family's cross-country exodus from the Oklahoma Dustbowl to the promised land of California. Ranking No. 21 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 greatest American films, it's also the story of emotional resonance and human perseverance as Henry Fonda and Oscar-winner Jane Darwell turn in amazing performances. Tickets are $5.

The Cinematique Carolina series presents
The Sea Inside
Monday, April 18 at 5:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Winner of 2005's Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, The Sea Inside is based on the profoundly moving real life story of Spaniard Ramon Sampedro and stars Javier Bardem. Sampedro captured the world's attention and fought a 30-year campaign in favor of his right to die with dignity. His encounters with two women, Julia (Belen Rueda), a lawyer who supports his cause, and Rosa (Lola Dueqas), a neighbor who wants to convince him that life is worth living, leads to change in their own lives. Though he could not move himself Ramon Sampedro had the ability to move others and teach everyone the meaning, value and preciousness of living. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles and is rated PG-13 for intense depiction of mature thematic material. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.

All tickets can be purchased by calling the Carolina Theatre Box Office at (336) 333-2605, visiting http://www.carolinatheatre.com or in person at 310 S. Greene Street in downtown Greensboro.

RainbowPixels

RainbowPixels transfers your home movies from film or video to Digital Video, CD and DVD. I used them to transfer the 8 mm film of my parent's wedding to digital video, so that my brother Bob could make a DVD for their 50th anniversary. RainbowPixels also transfered about 30 wedding slides to CD-ROM. They did a great service, in good time. I recommend them. They're located in Greensboro, NC, but they accept work from all over.
