Mountains under the ice

Experts have mapped the mountains under the Antarctic ice cap and determined that they are as large as the Alps.
"The surprising thing was that not only is this mountain range the size of the Alps, but it looks quite similar to the (European) Alps, with high peaks and valleys," said Fausto Ferraccioli, a geophysicist at the British Antarctic Survey who took part in the research.
He told Reuters that the mountains would probably have been ground down almost flat if the ice sheet had formed slowly. But the presence of jagged peaks might mean the ice formed quickly, burying a landscape under up to 4 km (2.5 miles) of ice."[emphasis mine]

How much ice is that?

"Antarctica, bigger than the United States...contains enough of it to raise world sea levels by about 57 metres (187 feet) if it ever all melted."

Does this mean that there could have been a world-wide flood at some point? That the earth could have been much warmer, and rapidly cooled? That there was some kind of event which caused all this to happen suddenly?

What if "the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights."? Genesis 7:11-12

Designed to believe in God

The UK Daily Mail Online has an article that quotes this week's issue of New Scientist as reporting that human brains are "hard wired to believe in God." We are biologically engineered to believe that things have a design and purpose, and to believe that our minds are separate from our bodies.

Now, what evolutionary purpose would that serve?

Even scientists can stumble on Truth now and then. The Bible says "...the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness..." Romans 2:15 ESV

24 Tips To Becoming An Early Riser

"Waking up early is only a learned habit." This is so true!

#12 is the most effective for me:

"Be Consistent. Make sure that you go to bed and wake up every day at the same time. Consistency develops habits, and waking up early is only a habit."

I have to discipline myself to go to bed at the same time every night, even on vacations and weekends, or else I'm messed up.

If I can't sleep because I have too much to think about, #3 really helps:

"Plan your day the night before." This helps me to focus my thoughts and release my brain from thinking about tomorrow.

Which leads to #6: "Eliminate stress."

Reading the Bible and praying is how I deal with stress. I confess my sins, turn my loved ones and my plans over to the care of God, and then I can sleep easier.

National Day of Prayer

It's good to promote prayer, but prayer is no good, just a waste of time, unless the Person you're praying to is real. The only effective prayer is to the One True God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, the Father in Heaven who sent His only begotten Son Jesus to earth to reconcile us to Himself.

Psalm 115 (New International Version)
1 Not to us, O LORD, not to us
but to your name be the glory,
because of your love and faithfulness.

2 Why do the nations say,
"Where is their God?"

3 Our God is in heaven;
he does whatever pleases him.

4 But their idols are silver and gold,
made by the hands of men.

5 They have mouths, but cannot speak,
eyes, but they cannot see;

6 they have ears, but cannot hear,
noses, but they cannot smell;

7 they have hands, but cannot feel,
feet, but they cannot walk;
nor can they utter a sound with their throats.

8 Those who make them will be like them,
and so will all who trust in them.

9 O house of Israel, trust in the LORD—
he is their help and shield.

10 O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD—
he is their help and shield.

11 You who fear him, trust in the LORD—
he is their help and shield.

12 The LORD remembers us and will bless us:
He will bless the house of Israel,
he will bless the house of Aaron,

13 he will bless those who fear the LORD—
small and great alike.

14 May the LORD make you increase,
both you and your children.

15 May you be blessed by the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

16 The highest heavens belong to the LORD,
but the earth he has given to man.

17 It is not the dead who praise the LORD,
those who go down to silence;

18 it is we who extol the LORD,
both now and forevermore.
Praise the LORD.
